About

A grime pioneer

Dylan Kwabena Mills, better known as Dizzee Rascal, is a towering figure in British music, a grime pioneer whose impact extends far beyond the genre's boundaries.

Born on 18 September 1984, in Bow, East London, his story is one of raw talent, resilience, and a constant drive to innovate.

His early forays into music were within the nascent grime scene, a genre that emerged from the underground of London's urban music landscape. Dizzee's raw energy and lyrical dexterity quickly set him apart. He was a key member of the Roll Deep crew, a collective of grime artists that played a pivotal role in shaping the genre's sound and identity. However, his ambition and singular vision led him to pursue a solo career.

In 2003, at the age of just 18, Dizzee Rascal released his debut album, Boy in da Corner. This groundbreaking record was a visceral and unflinching portrayal of life in East London, capturing the raw energy and social realities of the time. It was a critical and commercial success, earning him the prestigious Mercury Prize, a rare feat for a grime artist. The album's innovative sound, blending grime's raw energy with elements of garage and electronica, cemented Dizzee's status as a visionary artist.

The success of Boy in da Corner propelled Dizzee Rascal into the mainstream, but he never rested on his laurels. He continued to evolve his sound, incorporating elements of pop, dance, and hip-hop into his music. Albums like Maths + English (2007) and Tongue n' Cheek (2009) showcased his versatility and his ability to craft catchy, anthemic tracks that resonated with a wider audience. 'Bonkers', a collaboration with Armand Van Helden, became a global hit, further solidifying his international appeal.

Throughout his career, Dizzee Rascal has remained a constant innovator, refusing to be confined by genre boundaries. He has collaborated with a diverse range of artists, from Calvin Harris and Florence Welch to Shakka and Skepta, demonstrating his ability to adapt and thrive in different musical contexts.

Beyond his musical achievements, Dizzee Rascal is a cultural icon, a symbol of the creative energy and resilience of London's urban youth. He has played a significant role in bringing grime music to a global audience, paving the way for a new generation of artists. He’s a multi-award winner, a festival headliner, and a consistent chart presence. Dizzee Rascal's journey from the streets of Bow to the forefront of British music is a testament to his talent, determination, and unwavering commitment to pushing creative boundaries. He remains a vital and influential figure in the UK music landscape.

It was a great night with a friend I haven't seen in a while, good venue with great parking (lots to choose from). Would definitely go to the venue again if there is another event on :) & Dizzee Rascal was amazing as ever. It is my 3rd time seeing him live and hope to see him again soon!
